Each has had it’s own USPs, and Valve have clearly taken inspiration from a lot of places. Since then, controllers have pretty much featured 2 analogue sticks, 4 shoulder buttons/triggers, a D-pad, 4 general purpose buttons, and a couple of “system” buttons. The first analogue stick appeared on the N64 controller, then the Playstation Dual Shock controller was released with 2 analogue sticks.

I’ve now racked up a good view hours of gaming on games with various types of control systems, so does it fulfil it’s promise? TL DR. The promise of the Steam Controller is that it “lets you play your entire collection of Steam games on your TV-even the ones designed without controller support in mind.” When this was announced it seemed like to Holy Grail of input devices, the solution to all of my problems, so of course when I heard I could pre-order one this year for delivery a month before they went on general sale, I snapped one up. When I’ve been really desperate, my Rii wireless mouse/keyboard, which is OK in a pinch but far from ideal.

A Wii Remote, which works for games that need a mouse pointer, but is tiring to use for long periods and tricky to configure well.

An XBox 360 controller which is the de facto standard controller for games with gamepad support, but doesn’t work with all games.

Not sure it's relevant, but the xbox one controller, including the start/menu button, works fine with Don't Starve, the solo game.It’s been about a year since I built my Steam Machine, and since then I’ve tried various solutions for playing PC games on my TV while sitting on my sofa. I don't have a 360 or other generic controller so I don't know if this is solely an issue with the xbox one controller. the game loads up defaulted to keyboard controls and I cannot change this. It seems to register the remap, as the start icon next to 'apply' is changed to whatever I select, however when I click to apply, nothing happens. remapping the 'start' button to something else. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game to see if it would default me to controller, but this did not work and I'm stuck on keyboard controls now. So now I can't change back to controller at all. The apply button is required to change back to controller. Once I had finished setting up the server, I went back into settings to revert to controller and realised my huge error. I thought maybe I could create the server using keyboard and mouse, then switch back to controller, so I went into settings and changed the input to keyboard and mouse. When trying to create my own server, this was not working. I was initially playing the game with controller (it detected the controller when I first loaded the game and asked if I wanted to use it and I clicked yes) and managed to get around the button not working by clicking to join a server with the mouse or letting the server host click the start button.

The 'apply' button (start button, or menu button on the one controller) is not functional/mapped.
